About us

Historical Overview: The idea for an engineering and consulting firm was born in 2003, when engineer-consultant Wassim Hassan opened his engineering office on Baghdad Street in Damascus. This came after a twenty-year career in the public sector in the field of road construction and topography, as well as his professional participation in surveying studies for the Latakia-Aleppo reclamation project with the renowned Lebanese consulting firm Khatib & Alami (1999-2001), which provided the initial impetus for this initiative

In 2004, Engineer Wassim Hassan (CEO), accompanied by his friend, surveyor engineer Imad Khourma,, founded the company Compass - Al Bousla Al Massahiyya in Damascus and Homs. Soon, the idea of establishing a broader engineering consultancy evolved, leading to the establishment of Orient Engineering Consulting in 2007 in the Damascus countryside. This was done in collaboration with the architectural consultant Ahmad Al-Zafari, the structural engineer Nahed Badawieh, the civil engineer for sanitary works Aiham Al-Mouazen, the structural engineer Youssef Al-Hayek, Dr. Mohannad Al-Dabbas (Electrical Engineer), and the mechanical consultant Salem Abu Tafesh

The company expanded rapidly and brought together an elite group of experts from various disciplines, including:

• Urban planning

• Road and railway engineering

• Surveying and topography

• Construction and buildings

• Dams and irrigation

• Renewable energy and electricity

Over the years, the company has created its designs and studies with a number of prominent consultants, including:

• Dr. Joseph Sidnawi (civil engineer) - General Manager

• Dr. Shafiq Dawood (former CEO of Syrian Airlines)

• Dr. Farouk Al-Adly (former Minister of Environment)

• Ir. Houssam Safadi (Former Minister of Housing)

• Urban Planner Zahi Al-Hares

• Dr. Aref Dalila (Former Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, Damascus.

• Dr. A. Kardab (Electrical Engineer)

• Ir. Wael Zoueid (Mechanical Engineer)

• Ir. Nizar Karqout (Mechanical Engineer)

• Surveying Consultant Mahmoud Mokhtar

• Architecture Consultant Wadie Roumieh

• Road Engineer Ahmad Al-Jassem

• Architect Safwan Kardab

• Civil Engineer Mahmoud Hilal

• Surveying Engineer Wissam Masoud

• Architect Amjad Al-Koud

• And many other colleagues…

Between 2007 and 2011, the company carried out numerous major projects in the field of design and supervision, including:

• Cities and villages

• Industrial cities

• Customs cities

• Buildings and structures

• Roads and bridges

• Tourist resorts

• Residential complexes

However, due to the deteriorating security situation in Syria, the company was forced to stop operations. Most of the technicians emigrated, the headquarters were looted during the war, and most of the equipment, documents and projects were lost. In 2019, consulting and engineering firms were officially dissolved by the government

However, the scientific and academic heritage of the team remained a valuable basis for further activities. Therefore, the Compass-SYR partnership is currently being established:

Compass-SYR – Syrian Network for Sustainable Development and Reconstruction
